DVD Menu Design

Windtalkers
Client : Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer

John Woo's movie was based around the long forgotten contribution of the Navajo Code talkers during the battle of the Pacific against the Japanese. The menus contain many of the original maps from their first campaigns as well as the Marines' traditional hymn written in Navajo in the background. All the menus were created in After Effects with the sequence editing and post sound produced in Final Cut Pro.

Caravaggio
Client : British Film Institute

Caravaggio is probably the closest Derek Jarman came to a mainstream film, depicting the life and struggles of the imfamous artist. The menus used the main tableau from the film, layering notes and images from Derek Jarmans Black book over the top. Each menu has a minute amount of motion as the models stand for the artist with multiple transitions running through the disc and an animated version of Jarman's notebook.

Space Odyssey
Client : BBC

Commissioned to produce the DVD version for BBC Worldwide, creating original menus for the European release. Designs were based on mission control's main screen, creating and adding technical data onto various edited sequences, animating the logo and compositing effects to give the breaking signal effect. All the work was completed in After Effects with Final Cut Pro used for video and audio editing.

The Draughtsman's Contract
Client : British Film Institute

Composited over a painting taken from the film, and using an original 17th century font, sections taken from The Draughtsman's Contract animate onto screen introducing the main menu. The text which features on every menu contains all the hidden extras, however, these can only be accessed from certain menus. The images in the centre frame use original sketches by Peter Greenaway with parts of the appropriate scene from the film composited within. Each transition has animated text writing on to introduce the next menu.

The Italian Job
Client : Paramount Pictures

Seen as one of the cult classics of its time, we knew we could not let the fans down with this title. Reference from original film stills and photographs were used to produce the 3D model cars accurate down to the smallest detail. This included having the number plates remade and photographed, and acquiring several original 60s Mini parts for reference. The map the cars drive on in the menus is of Turin in 1969 and was flown over from Italy by hand for us by the mapmakers so it could be scanned! 3D animation and models were created by Jellyfish Pictures based on supplied storyboards and then composited back into the additional 2D and 3D environments.

Once Upon a Time...
Client : Paramount Pictures

The menus for Once Upon a Time in the West, Sergio Leone's epic had to be designed despite not having access to the restored master until days before completion of the project. The only version available to us was the old VHS letterbox master. To get around the poor picture quality and sizing issue, the menus used minimal moving footage, incorporated into re-painted backdrops. The headshots were also grabs, reworked in Photoshop with various paint techniques. Transitions used shot footage of smoke and dust to wipe from one menu to another.

The last of S-Club7's live DVDs before they split up; these menus came from hours of reading teenage magazines and looking for graphic influences! The final menu set had random transitions between all the menus with one of the band members appearing each time, giving us 32 possible transitions.
